Natural Green Cotton Sliver

This particular cotton sliver for spinning is grown in California and specially processed to make it easier to spin.This special process was developed by Joan Ruane so that handspinners could more readily enjoy spinning cotton.

Thought to originate some 5000 years ago in the Americas, naturally colored cotton occurs in red, green and several shades of brown.Due to the specialized harvest techniques required, naturally colored cotton is relatively rare and more expensive than more common white cotton.

Caffeic acid gives naturally green cotton its characteristic color.

Natural green cotton can be darkened to a forest green as follows:

• Add 0.75 oz to 2 quarts of hot water from the tap
• Add ~1 tablespoon of laundry detergent
• Soak for 30 minutes.

Cotton sliver has a definite direction that makes spinning easier. If you are having trouble spinning a smooth strand, try the other end.
